This page covers the released game's documented save-point decisions and route planning. Button prompts, the exact slot limit and automatic-save timing are not established for every platform, so use the prompts shown by your version.
Confirm a manual save before leaving
At an active save point, interact and follow the game's save prompts. Before replacing a slot, decide whether it is your only copy of a collectible, weapon-challenge or ending branch. If the interface lets you keep another slot, use it for the new state.
After saving, check the available load/save information against your location and progress. Before a long session, you can test a newly made save after confirming it exists; do not sacrifice an earlier branch slot simply to test an unverified workaround. A later load should return you to the state you intentionally recorded.
| Term | What it means for your route |
|---|---|
| Manual save | A recorded state you can return to; preserve an earlier one before an irreversible choice |
| Checkpoint in our walkthrough | An editorial stage label such as Film School or Desiderium; it does not promise an automatic save |
| Steam Cloud | A store-listed synchronization feature; it is not a replacement for making an in-game save |
| Pause or console suspension | An active session; do not treat it as proof that progress was written to a save |
Do not assume opening a door, watching a cinematic or quitting automatically creates the branch save you need. This guide does not specify an unverified F5/F9 shortcut, save-anywhere command or fixed number of slots.
Spend three water points deliberately
The Silver Key opens the second-floor apartment bathroom cabinet containing the Silver Bottle. Use the bottle at three different save points; the filled item then reads Bottle With Three Doses of Water. These are puzzle interactions, separate from making a normal save.
The publisher-linked official guide recommends these stops:
| Water stop | Location | Before using the bottle |
|---|---|---|
| W1 | Floor 2 apartment bedroom | Save first if this is your current return point |
| W2 | Floor 3 apartment study | Check whether you still need a nearby save for unfinished exploration |
| W3 | Floor 2 director's office | Finish any pending studio visit, then use the bottle |
This trio keeps the Film School save available for the upcoming journeys. The order is a route suggestion, not a password: other available points can supply water, but every one you consume reduces your saving options.
Check the bottle after each stop. Returning to a drained point will not supply another dose or restore its save function. An earlier save made before consumption is the rollback option if you want to choose a different set; loading it also rolls back progress made afterward.
Once you have all three doses, use the moonlit vacation-room window, cleanse the third canister, screen it and collect the Cold Chisel. The later knife ritual uses a different moonlight destination.
Keep saves at the decisions that matter
| Stage | State to preserve | Why keep it |
|---|---|---|
| Before Fumus | Before using the Pipe on the boss | Branch for Exhaust Pipe and return to the unchanged Wrench-only route |
| Before drawing bottle water | Active save points and unfinished pickups still accessible | Change the three-point choice if the remaining route becomes inconvenient |
| Cold Chisel obtained, before completing the darkroom photograph | Last-star pickup and original-world locker sweep still available | Finish all six stars and lockers before the later cutoff |
| Before Vitria and the ritual transition | A confirmed original-world state | Revisit unfinished tasks before entering the altered world |
| Aurifer obtained, no Relicta killed | A clean late-game branch | Complete the two main endings from the same preserved state |
| Fresh game for hidden routes | Early progress before normal puzzle completion | Prepare the Bible encounters under the reported unlock prerequisites |
These are save priorities, not a promise that your platform has enough slots to keep every stage at once. Prioritize the route you are actually pursuing. The achievement guide explains challenge conflicts; the walkthrough supplies progression between these stops.
Protect the Aurifer ending branch
Show the late-game save plan and branch spoilers
The useful branch is after the hotel-door transformation, before any Relicta kill. A save after killing one is already on the kill branch. Keep the clean slot and use another for subsequent progress if your version permits it.

Complete one finale, then reload the clean state for the opposite choice. This replays the final route; it does not unlock every ending in a single uninterrupted run. Hidden routes require new-game preparation described on the endings page.
If saving or loading does not behave as expected
| Symptom | Check first | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| One point stopped working after using the bottle | Whether that point supplied a water dose | That every other save point is broken |
| A load returns to an earlier room or inventory | The selected slot and the last save you confirmed | That reaching a guide checkpoint automatically saved |
| You cannot recover the no-kill ending branch | Whether a clean pre-kill slot remains | That carrying Aurifer alone caused the kill branch |
| A slot disappears or will not retain new progress | Platform, game version and whether the slot remains listed after the menu is reopened | A universal bug or a guaranteed repair |
For a persistence problem, keep any working save and note the platform, version, slot and last successful save when reporting it through the official community. Avoid deleting saves, changing cloud settings or replacing files based on a fix for a different game or build. This guide has not verified a platform-specific repair procedure.
